How to finish your tiles…

A great deal of time and consideration goes into selecting the perfect tiles for a project. Colour, format, finish and layout are all carefully weighed up.  Yet one crucial element is often overlooked until the very last minute: how the tiles will be finished at their exposed edges.

It’s not uncommon for a tiler to rush into a showroom mid-install because a homeowner has suddenly realized “We can’t leave it looking like that”!  Not everyone can afford to do floor to ceiling tiles in their bathroom.  This is where tile trims come in and they are worth discussing – before tiling begins – not after.

Why tile trims matter:

Tile trims provide a clean, durable and visually polished way to finish exposed tile edges.  Far more than a practical necessity, they play an important role in the overall design of a space.  Modern trims are available in a wide range of colours and finishes, specifically designed to coordinate with today’s tapware and fittings.  Sizes typically range from 6mm to 22mm, making them suitable for most tile thicknesses and applications.

Whether used around niches, external corners, benchtops or half height walls, tile trims remove the harsh look of a raw tile edge and elevates the final result.

Popular Tile Trim options:

Metal Trims.

Available in virtually every tapware colour are a popular choice for achieving a seamless and coordinated look. A variety of Metal Trims are kept in store at the Country Tiler, to be purchased as needed – other such as special powder coated options need to be ordered in.

Metal trims come in both round and square edge, they also come in a slimline angle profile – the most popular option.

Plan ahead with metal trims:

It’s important to note that most metal tile trims must be installed as tiling progresses and cannot be retrofitted once the job is complete.  For this reason, metal trims should be selected early, when planning the final look of your space.  While retrofitted trims do exist, they are typically limited in both size and colour options and often require compromises.

Ceramic Tile Borders.

Traditional styles still have their place in today’s homes.  There remains a strong demand for traditional Victorian style trims, and specialist tile suppliers in Australia continue to produce these locally. When chosen thoughtfully, decorative capping and border tiles can add charm and personality to bathrooms, laundries and kitchens.

Pencil Capping.

Capping tiles add character and can introduce a subtle pop of colour. They offer a cost-effective way to neatly finish your tiles if you are not taking them right up to the ceiling.  This is very popular with more traditional or decorative schemes.

Leaving an exposed edge:

Whilst not to everyone’s liking, sometimes leaving the exposed edge of your tile can work. It will provide a raw, rustic look that organic, earthy interiors ask for.  Don’t be frightened to consider it if you are looking for that real down-to-earth simple finish to your tiles.

Another option is a mitered edge – most tilers can do this for you if you can’t find the right trim to provide the look you are after.  Popular around bath hobs, niches and on shower ledge walls – a mitered edge is worth discussing with your tiler.

The finishing touch that deserves early attention:

Tile trims may be small in scale, but they have a big impact.  When considered early and chosen carefully, they provide both function and finesse – ensuring your tiled spaces look complete, intentional and beautifully finished.

Tile trims are the finishing touch that shouldn’t be left until last!
